Following this, the Wealthy Street Animal Hospital Mural, painted by Erick Picardo, uses bright colors and positive imagery to portray people's interaction with animals in the city. ![]() Another mural by Chaffer can be found later in the tour at Brewery Vivant. This mural explores the evolution of caffeine in plants as a mechanism to help pollinators remember a plant's location over different seasons. This artwork, on the building's rear, is the collaborative effort of seven artists: Dennis Nagelkirk, Carrie Andrews, Ruby Miller, Teresa Zbiciak, Jason Rood, Julia Greenway, and Colleen O’Donnell.Ĭontinuing on the tour, one can visit the Scorpion Hearts Club Mural at 1035 Wealthy St SE, created by artist Maddison Chaffer. The building was previously the African Community Center, and now features a mural paying tribute to war refugees from various African countries who resettled in Grand Rapids. The tour begins at Testa Rossa Pizzeria, less than two miles east of downtown Grand Rapids. ![]() To showcase the creative energy of the area, local businesses have commissioned many of these murals, creating Uptown landmarks that can be viewed via a self-guided walking or driving tour. Grand Rapids has been named by USA Today as one of America’s top 10 cities for seeing amazing art, with its plethora of public murals playing a significant role in this recognition.
